The 2017 FIRST LEGO League robotics competition is just around the corner and now is the time to start getting your teams organised.
If you haven't seen the FIRST LEGO League competition before, each year students between the ages 9 - 16 are given a challenge theme, in 2017 it is hydro dynamics. Students must work in a group to identify a real world problem that is associated with this and then come up with a solution to this problem. They will need to interview professionals related to this problem and research the topic so they can present it at the competition. Then as well as the presentation the team must design and build a robot that can accumulate points by undertaking missions on the 2017 robotics mission table. Students are given 2 and a half minutes to accumulate as many points as they can. The third aspect of the competition is to show the judges that your team has worked towards the 'core values' of the competition, themes like 'gracious professionalism' and 'what we learn is more important than what we win'.
Last year Building Block Studio hosted a number of FIRST LEGO League teams and it was a great experience. We were lucky that one of our teams won a trophy which we proudly display in the studio. We can provide mentoring, equipment and access to previous years missions. We can also help setup your team and provide some assistance to new teams as well.
The competition duration is fixed as this is an international competition the start date is 29th August, the competition dates are likely 18th November or 12th November. Each team member will be required to pay a registration fee, which will be determined based on the number of members of the team and teams will meet each week for a training session which will incur a $15 fee for each session.
Please contact us if you would like to learn more, or would like to register your interest so we can start forming teams.
